PRESS RELEASE

VOGUE TALENTS TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL FUR DESIGN COMPETITION ‘REMIX’ FOR THIRD YEAR

Daniel Kohavi Gold Prize Winner

This year’s judges will be Sara Maino, Veronica Etro, Tamu McPherson, Leah Perez and Lory Yedid.

January 2016: For a third consecutive year, Vogue Talents will be a principal partner to REMIX, the international fashion design competition organised by The International Fur Federation (IFF) and supported by Vogue Talents and MiFur.

The IFF launched REMIX in 2003 in an effort to support the next generation of designers to develop their skills and explore their relationship with fur. The competition gives up-and-coming design talent from across the globe an opportunity to showcase their innovative designs to a highly influential, international audience and to receive global exposure across a range of traditional and online media channels.

Previous finalists have benefited from developing relationships across the industry, and some have gone on to work for major labels such as Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and Balmain. Last year’s winner Yusuf Kalem saw his designs used across various advertising campaigns, as well as editorial shoots for Vogue Italia and Harpers Bazaar US.

For the first time in its 14 year history, this year’s REMIX will present the finalists and their designs within a themed showcase; a ‘talents greenhouse’. Complete with tropical vegetation, the greenhouse will act as a focal point for the show, designed to represent how REMIX guides and nurtures talented individuals as they build their experience with the natural material.

A shortlist of 12 designers have now been selected and invited to the Teatro Vetra in Milan for the REMIX grand finale on 3rd March, where the final judging will take place. Each designer will show three looks in an exhibition style format to include fur garments and accessories, as well as other non fur items.

The twelve finalists are:

  • • Santiago Navarro – Argentina
  • • Xuanxuan Li – China
  • • Louisa Ogaard Reinholt Jakobsen – Denmark
  • • Joona Rautiainen & Anna Sarasoja – Finland
  • • Daniel Kohavi – Israel
  • • Sugimoto Chiharu – Japan
  • • Liesa Tops – Netherlands
  • • Laura Farinacci – Switzerland
  • • Ali Koc – Turkey
  • • Natalia Eyres – UK
  • • Edda Gimnes – UK
  • • Ari Naranchimeg – USA

Franca Sozzani, editor-in-chief at Vogue Italia has been nurturing young designers for more than ten years: «Vogue Italia with Vogue Talents continues to support young talented designers, it is fundamental at this stage of their career to have the support from the industry» says Mrs. Sozzani.

This is the reason why a host of well-known industry figures are delighted to be involved in REMIX and sit on the jury. They include Sara Maino, senior editor Vogue Italia and head of Vogue Talents; Veronica Etro, creative director of Etro Woman collections; high profile American blogger Tamu McPherson, author of All the Pretty Birds, and street-style photographer now based in Milan; Leah Perez, head of the department of fashion design at Shenkar and Lory Yedid, partner at Value Search.

The three winners of REMIX will feature in a Vogue Italia photo shoot, receive best-in-class training working with some of the world’s leading fur and fashion designers, and a supply of materials to allow for design experimentation and innovation.

Mark Oaten, CEO, IFF said:

« Year after year, the young talent that comes through REMIX continues to push the boundaries of fur, re-inventing this versatile, natural material. The fact that Vogue Italia continues to support and recognise us is in itself proof of the quality of work these young designers create. Knowing that any winning designs will feature in Vogue Italia is also wonderful encouragement to all our REMIX entrants and guarantees they will all be playing at the top of their game. »

Vogue Italia will be supporting REMIX via content in its March and April issues and reporting live from the REMIX show via its social media channels.

Over 1,000 students from more than 25 countries have taken part in the competition since its inception 14 years ago. Previous finalists and winners include Astrid Anderson, a regular at London men’s fashion week; Nicolas Martin Garcia, menswear designer for Dolce & Gabbana; Thom Barends, product designer for Haider Ackermann; Sally Bohan, senior designer for Patagonia; and Roderick Buijs, menswear and womenswear designer at Louis Vuitton.

Mark Oaten concludes:

«It is the role of the IFF and REMIX to support our young designers so that they can build their skills and experience. There is a strong and growing demand for fur including among new audiences. With fur being used across womenswear SS 16 collections and the recent menswear AW 16 collections displaying more fur fashion than ever – with an average of 63% designers including Burberry, Moncler and Versace using the material – it’s clear that fur continues to be a major trend and has a bright future».
